Power and Drivetrain
The Western Star 4800 comes with a Detroit DD13 engine, which pumps out between 350 and 505 horsepower, along with between 1,250 and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. It can be paired with one of three transmissions:
- Eaton Fuller 10-, 13-, 15- and 18-speed
- Eaton Fuller UltraShift PLUS
- Allison Automatic 3000, 4000, 4500, 4700
A notable feature of this truck is that instead of fly-wheel housing, the power unit is mounted on clutch housing. This allows the power unit to be closer to the output shaft of the transmission, creating less frame flex and a better ride.

Threaded Spring Pins
Western Star has an exclusive design that threads pins into the spring bushing directly, which creates increased stability and better handling.
Forged Steel Door Hinges
To prevent sagging and improve durability, this model's door hinges are mounted internally.
Cab Insulating and Soundproofing
To improve both the insulation and soundproofing, barium insulation is placed between the steel cab's double walls. Plus, the thick floor pads create an even quieter ride.
Suspended Pedals
In addition to being easy to clean, the suspended pedals in this dump truck enhance safety by preventing things from becoming lodged beneath them.
Safer Seats
All Western Star 4800 models come with the RollTek seat system, which include side-impact airbags. And in the event of a rollover, the driver will have his or her seat belt tightened, and the air suspension seat will be compressed to the lowest position to help prevent injuries.
